Sermon Notes for SundayI was asked to preach at the Perry Alliance Church a couple of months ago, as that church seeks to pray for suffering saints on the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. I accepted most willingly. I knew early on what my text would be – a Scripture I have been meditating on read more.. Here We Go AgainSo I just saw one of CNNs top stories for today. The headline simply read, “Voters Ready.”
Aside from being inane and totally unimaginative as a headline, I really expected a story like this…

“Voters Ready”
PALM SPRINGS, FL - After a countywide voter education project, voting authorities claim that voters are ready to cast their ballots.
“We’ve had read more.. Update on the Life of GabeOne of the many things that I have been privileged to see over the last couple of years is how the practice of law can be used to bring honor and glory to our Savior - not just through the actual practice, but also through the ministry opportunities that God opens up through that practice. read more.. Sudan Needs Your PrayersFor the past couple of years, since the 2005 signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended the decades-long civil war, north and south Sudan have lived at relative peace with one another. That is not to say that the nation has been peaceful; the genocide in Darfur is ongoing, and in the north/south border read more.. PerspectiveWhen I read the ongoing news of violence and destruction from India, the emotion I feel is heartbreak. When I hear about the suffering in cities like Mosul, I can’t help but feel sorrow. These events, and so many others like them, are examples of the evil present in this world. I would imagine that read more.. When the Trees Change…The timing of the OBCL Alumni Meeting in Lake Geneva, WI, could not have been more perfect for the purpose of fall colors.
Aside from the fall colors, it was an excellent weekend–meeting new folks, hanging with old friends, and unexpectedly getting elected president of the Alumni Association were certainly highlights.
October in SavannahOne of the perks that came after the banquet - and the wonderful company that was willing to go on a little road trip with me - was a weekend of relaxation. While it didn’t have as much sleep as I wanted (because I couldn’t sleep all 24 hours of three days in a row…) read more.. The Slow Return to the Land of the LivingSo bloggish infotainment has been few and far between on this venue of late. I have an excuse: I took the Banquet Boat down the event planning equivalent of the River Styx to the Gates of Exhaustion. And now I’m paddling upstream to get to some sense of normality.
We had in the vicinity of 700 read more.. The Aftermath is ComingToday’s Weekly Reminder.
*****
We have been talking a lot about aftermath lately. The news has been abuzz with it – the aftermath of Hurricane Ike in Texas, for instance, the aftermath of the political party conventions, the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Georgia. And we’ve been talking about aftermath in The Weekly Reminder, especially relating read more.. Experimenting with HDRThe first time I saw HDR photographs I was blown away. Little did I imagine then that my little Nikon D40 and some open source software could produce some amazing HDR results.
I did, though, discover that the D40 was inexplicably produced without automatic exposure bracketing, meaning I had to do this all manually. Now that I’ve fiddled read more.. Your local international non-profit…[And other such grammatical idiosyncratic anomalies...am I the only one disturbed by phrases like "Acting Thailand's Prime Minister" (from the AP) and "Author and Pastor Rick Warren of the book 'A Purpose Driven Life'..." Sharing Remember’s WorkI apologize for the lightness of blog posting of late. I would offer excuses, but it’s the same excuse I always give - life’s crazy. I like it that way, generally, but sometimes it gets a little out of hand…
Last week, “Generations with Vision” radio host Kevin Swanson was gracious enough to feature me in read more.. Life’s a Stick ShiftMy first - and currently only - experience driving a car with a manual transmission came a few years ago, when the crazy used car salesman was desperate to sell me a little Focus. Another MilestoneIt seems strange to be posting about yet another milestone - they have been coming fast and furious this year. It also seems strange that law school graduation - when I finished studies 10 months ago, passed the bar exam, and became a lawyer in the meantime - should mean so much to me, read more.. Did you know……that Delta is now too cheap to provide you with a paper folder to put your boarding passes in?
Or, as the ticket agent told me today, “We discontinued folders a number of months ago.”
Guess what frequent flyer doesn’t regret not flying Delta in the past few months?
But this I will say - they had excellent read more.. Wonderful Whirlwhind WeekendI just returned from a truly terrific weekend in CA. Sunsets, beautiful scenery, celebration, and the best company in the world gave me what was basically just a perfect time.
I am learning to love my camera’s manual settings. Getting the right shot takes me forever, with lots of practice shots, but when it read more.. Iffy HeadlinesOne of the joys of having both my work and personal e-mail accounts plastered all over the Internet is that I get lots of spam. Spambots just love people like me, I’m afraid - more interested in letting people get in touch with me than in protecting my contact data.
But that gives me the chance read more.. Learning to ReceiveI’m really bad at receiving gifts. Maybe that sounds weird, but those of you that know me are probably nodding, wondering why I’m stating that like some big unknown; sometimes, I’m afraid, it’s painfully obvious.
But I’ve been learning. Learning because it’s also becoming painfully obvious that I’m inadequate on my own in so many read more.. Petra UpdatedYesterday I went through all of the trip’s pictures, and was again mind-boggled by thinking back on Petra. So I have a bunch more shots that I just can’t resist sharing…

The Prayer of FaithI must admit, one of my least favorite parts about missions trips is trying to summarize them for others. There is so much emotion, so much passion, so many stories in each one that words just don’t cut it.
So when I take the time to really try to get some of the passion out read more.. PetraEver since knowing that we would be heading for a full trip to Jordan, I hoped that we could take the trek to Petra, one of the new wonders of the world - and rightfully so. Ministry - Shots and ThoughtsGratuitous rhyming aside, I have lots of both shots and thoughts from this trip.
Pictures and thoughts are at Remember Ambassadors.
A powerful story in the Weekly Reminder.
And a few of my favorites…
FellowshipLast night I couldn’t help but sit and wonder at the Lord’s amazing power, as I sat with a brother in Christ on his porch overlooking a huge portion of Amman. He spoke limited English, but our conversation was rich and deep – it was true fellowship with broken communication.
